Rise of Kingdoms (ROK) is a popular strategy game where building an effective Open Field march plays a crucial role in battles. However, many players often make serious mistakes when building their marches, leading to poor results. Below are the most common mistakes players make when building an Open Field march, along with ways to fix them and maximize your army’s strength.

Not Including Huo Qubing in Your March

One of the biggest mistakes players commonly make is not using Huo Qubing in their Open Field march. He is an extremely powerful commander capable of dealing massive damage. In particular, Huo Qubing’s active skill only requires 850 rage to activate, while also reducing the enemy’s movement speed. This makes it easier for other units to approach and eliminate their targets. Without Huo Qubing, your march will lack damage and become vulnerable to counterattacks.

Tip: If you do not have Huo Qubing yet, invest in him right away. He is one of the essential commanders for Open Field battles.

Poor March Formation

Another common mistake is arranging troop types with significantly different movement speeds. For example, many players send cavalry into battle first because they move quickly, but this can cause the march to become scattered. By the time the cavalry arrives, slower archer or infantry units may still be on the way, splitting up the march and making it easier to destroy.

Tip: Arrange your march so that your troops have similar movement speeds. Send slower units, such as archers and infantry, first, followed by cavalry. This allows the units to arrive together and maintain formation during combat.

Investing Too Much in a Single Troop Type

When building an Open Field march, many players make the mistake of putting all their resources and equipment into a single troop type, making the march unbalanced. If that troop type is destroyed early, the remaining units will become weaker and unable to continue fighting effectively.

Tip: Instead of concentrating your resources on one troop type, distribute them evenly among all units to ensure that every troop type has comparable strength. This helps you maintain your fighting ability throughout the battle and earn more Kill Points.

Failing to Balance AoE and Single-Target Damage

Another mistake is focusing entirely on area-of-effect damage while neglecting single-target damage, or vice versa. AoE damage is important for damaging multiple targets at once and earning Kill Points quickly. However, single-target damage is more effective when you need to quickly finish off a priority target.

Tip: Maintain a balance between AoE and single-target damage. This allows you to handle both large-scale battles and situations where you need to focus your damage on an important target.

Failing to Optimize Buffs and Debuffs

Buffs and debuffs are important factors in Open Field battles. A march without skills that boost damage or weaken enemies will be at a disadvantage. For example, Johan P can buff rage and AoE damage for nearby troops, helping them maintain their combat effectiveness.

Tip: Always use commanders with wide-area buff and debuff abilities to strengthen your march and damage multiple targets. Commanders such as Johan P and Guan Yu are excellent choices for this role.

Choosing Commanders That Do Not Fit the Meta

Some players still use outdated commanders or commanders that no longer fit the current meta, such as Chaian or Mulan. Meanwhile, many newer and stronger commanders can both deal damage and provide beneficial effects for their allies, such as Johan P and Herman.

Tip: Always keep up with the meta and choose the strongest commanders—those that can deal significant damage while also providing buffs and debuffs for your march. This helps maximize your combat effectiveness and prevents you from wasting resources on commanders that are no longer effective.

Building an Open Field march in Rise of Kingdoms requires players to understand how to pair commanders, arrange their formation properly, and make use of buffs and debuffs. Avoiding the mistakes mentioned above will help you maximize your combat performance and earn more Kill Points in battle.
